Private lessons are a great supplement to a student’s music education. Whether they need help prepping for an audition/performance, or generally want to improve as a musician, private lessons are the best way to do so. The experience is tailored to the individual students needs and they receive direct feedback as they progress.

After every lesson I send the parent(s) and/or student a wrap up email outlining the following:
1. What we covered in the lesson
2. What to practice for the next lesson
3. General tips and guidance as needed

Supplies
In order to begin private lessons, the student will only need a drum pad and drum sticks. However, students will benefit greatly from playing on real instruments, like a bell/xylophone kit and a snare drum. For lessons on drum set, the student must have access to a drum set to practice on.

Ideally, the student will have the following:

Drum sticks (Vic Firth SD1 or equivalent. MUST BE WOOD STICKS)

Drum pad (Beginner students will benefit most from a pad with a head, rim, and adjustable tension, at least 8” is preferred to the smaller pads)

The method book they are working on (this will depend on their current level and interests)

Mallet instrument and mallets (Ideally the Musser student xylophone, but a student bell kit is also usable. Mallets are usually included in a kit)

Access to a metronome. Although there are apps and online options, it is ideal for the student to have a dedicated metronome device with a headphone output. (Korg has very affordable options)

A three ring binder with sheet protectors and a pencil. This is useful for organizing music that is not included in a method book. A pencil is always important to have ready to take notes in music and erase if necessary. (“A sharp mind does not have a better memory than a sharp pencil”)

Once again, if the student is studying drum set or mallets, they will need access to that instrument to practice on between lessons.
